The world of ice sports

What an unbelievable year this has been with ice sports for the kids. Not only do they do figure skating they also started ice hockey earlier this year.

Makayla who is obviously a figure skater, was very cautious to try out ice hockey. In the beginning she was not to keen and was not really interested. Almost a year later and she is in love with the sport. She simply said she will never be able to decide between figure skating and ice hockey. This year she also won her very first first star in a hockey match. First star means you are the best player of the winning team. She could not believe when she won the cup. She plays hard and really tries her best and enjoys every moment of it.

Makayla and her duet partner Kathleen (also homeschooled) obtained second place in the  2014 Seal Junior Figure Skating duet competition.

Matthew is an ice hockey fanatic. He hopes to one day take it professional. He plays very hard and aggressive (in a good way). Even though he is my son, I have to admit he plays very well. Matthew won one first start and two second starts this year. Second star is the best player of the losing team. He also won a cup with another boy for the most improved player. At the annual prize giving Matthew also received his very own puck and he was super happy when he got it.

End of October Matthew decided to hang up his figure skates for good and just concentrate on ice hockey.

Ice hockey is not only a fast sport, but it is physically very demanding - they sweat like you can't believe. This sport also improves their self confidence. Today Matthew is a totally different boy than what he was a year ago. He use to be very reserved and shy. Now he is a joker and joins and chats with anyone. What more can a parent ask for.

If you want to get your child active, let him/her try ice hockey out. They joy it brings the kids is fantastic and you will see a changed child. I myself also plan to play one day, that is if I can ever learn to skate ;)

Sport Activities

Last year the kids started doing Figure skating and are still doing it.

This coming weekend will be their first official grading tests.

With their big love for the ice and moving really fast, they have also now tried their hand at ice hockey. Matthew decided to officially join the DurbaKnights Ice Hockey Club. Makayla can after the next lesson decide if she wants to also join the ice hockey club.

DurbaKnights is Durban's official ice hockey club. They are currently making use of the ice rink at Galleria in Amanzimtoti. The Durban rink is currently undergoing a massive renovation. Once completed it would be an official Olympic size rink. We are looking forward to this. It is also a lot closer for us to travel to that rink.

Currently the kids are using the club's kit. If they move up to more advanced we will get them their own kit. Matthew does have his own hockey skates.

Ice hockey is not for those who are afraid of getting hurt. It is a very fast contact sport. It is also a fantastic team sport. It is great for kids to build self confidence and help them to overcome shyness.

I will make more future posts of their sporting progress.

When a failure is not a failure

Today was the last day of our Toti Homeschool Figure Skating Club. This is really a sad situation. Our group was nice and small and intimate. The kids made great friends and even mom too :)

However we could not round up enough Homeschoolers for the Club to keep it going. I have posted several ads everywhere I could but no luck.

To be honest I actually don't really understand this. Many homeschoolers complain that they need more opportunities etc. Then something wonderful comes knocking and they don't take it. Guess that is people.

But it is not all loss. Even though the Homeschool Figure Skating Club did not survive, the kids will be starting at a new bigger club on Saturday. This club would mean they are now registered to take part in competitions and take their figure skating to an entire new level.

I will post updates on their progress.

I am very proud of how good my kids are doing in such a short period. I see bright futures ahead :)

There is nothing more beautiful to me than seeing my kids grow. At least now dad can also come and watch on Saturdays and loads more opportunities to make more friends :)

Ice Skating Lessons

Today the kids took their first official ice skating lesson.

Their Coach Wendy van der Hammen - a former SA Champion, established a new club for homeschoolers - Toti Homeschool Figure Skating Club. We were super excited about this as the kids always wanted to take lessons.

It went pretty well, this is their forth time skating. Makayla was eager to try all kinds of new 'moves'. Matthew was so shy he did not want to ask for help.

Oh and even I skated a bit - was quite hilarious but fun.

This is the first time in over two years that the kids are able to take on activities. Matthew use to swim competitively and Makayla took Cecchetti Ballet. Unfortunately due to a financial situation everything had to be stopped. Now they are back in action.

Makayla's dream is to be able to figure skate competitively, Matthew at this stage just want to have fun.

The joys of our children.

Blessings
